Coin Dealer in Maryland

If you're looking for a coin dealer in Maryland to evaluate or buy your gold and silver coins, Maryland Cash For Gold buys individual qualifying coins, bullion and entire collections. Our team has more than 25 years of experience evaluating coins and precious metals, and Maryland Cash For Gold LLC is a licensed Maryland Precious Metals Buyer.

A coin can be worth more than the gold or silver it contains. Depending on the item, its date, mint mark, rarity, condition, certification and collector demand may also affect its value. We consider both precious-metal value and potential collector value when appropriate.

Visit us at 1746 East Joppa Rd in Parkville, Maryland for a free, no-obligation evaluation. We use professional, non-destructive testing equipment and evaluate your coins in front of you.

Walk-ins are welcome, or you can make an appointment.

What COINS Do We Buy?

Maryland Cash For Gold buys a variety of U.S. and foreign coins and coin-related items containing qualifying amounts of gold or silver.

U.S. Gold and Silver Coins

Some of the coins we commonly evaluate and buy include:

  • Morgan Dollars
  • Peace Dollars
  • American Silver Eagles
  • 1964 and earlier U.S. silver coins
  • Other U.S. coins containing at least 40% silver
  • U.S. gold coins containing 10K or better gold

Foreign Gold and Silver Coins

We buy foreign coins containing 40% or more silver or 10K or better gold.

You don't need to know the metal content before bringing a coin to us. If you're unsure what you have, we can examine and test it to determine whether it meets our buying criteria.

Bullion Coins, Bars and Silver Rounds

We buy qualifying precious-metal bullion, including gold bullion coins, silver bullion coins, silver rounds, gold bars, and silver bars.

We use professional, non-destructive testing equipment to help verify the authenticity and precious-metal content of bullion.

Proof Sets, Mint Sets, Coin Rolls and Certified Coins

We buy proof sets, mint sets, coin rolls and certified or slabbed coins when the coins meet our minimum precious-metal requirements.

For certified coins, the holder or label does not replace our own verification process. We independently authenticate qualifying coins before purchasing them.

Precious-Metal Medals

We also buy medals containing at least 40% silver or 10K gold.

What don't we buy?
We do not buy base-metal coins made only from metals such as copper, nickel or steel.

Selling a Coin Collection or Inherited Coins?

If you've inherited a coin collection, you may be looking at albums, rolls, boxes or jars without knowing which coins contain silver or gold - or whether any have collector value.

You don't have to know what you have before bringing it to us.

We evaluate collections that include coin albums, boxes, rolls, tubes, jars, mixed groups, unsorted coins and estate or inherited collections.

There's no need to organize everything by date, denomination or type before visiting us, and we don't charge a fee for sorting through a collection.

Larger collections take longer because each coin needs to be evaluated individually. That allows us to identify potentially significant coins rather than assuming everything in the collection has the same value.

How We Evaluate Your Coins

Determining what a coin is worth involves more than simply putting it on a scale. We identify the coin, examine its characteristics, analyze its precious-metal content, verify authenticity and consider the factors that may affect its current value.

1. Identify and Inspect the Coin

We begin by examining the coin itself. Depending on the item, we look at characteristics such as its type, date, mint mark, condition and design details.

We use magnification when necessary to inspect details more closely. Two coins that appear nearly identical at first glance can sometimes have very different values.

2. Analyze the Precious-Metal Content

We use the Hitachi X-MET8000 XRF analyzer to analyze the precious-metal composition of coins.

XRF, or X-ray fluorescence, allows us to identify elements within an item without scratching or damaging it. This helps us determine whether a coin contains qualifying amounts of gold, silver or other precious metals.

Testing takes place in front of you, and our monitor allows you to see the testing information during the evaluation.

3. Verify Authenticity

We also use the Sigma Metalytics Precious Metal Verifier PRO (PMV Pro) to help authenticate precious-metal coins and bullion non-destructively.

The Sigma helps verify precious-metal coins and bullion by testing the metal and measuring thickness. When the item's separately measured weight is entered, the device can calculate its expected dimensions for comparison with the physical item.

We combine those results with XRF analysis, physical examination and our experience when determining whether a qualifying coin or bullion item is authentic.

No Scratch or Acid Testing

We do not scratch or acid test coins. Our coin evaluation process uses non-destructive testing methods, professional equipment and physical examination so your coins remain intact throughout testing.

4. Evaluate Its Value

Once we've identified and authenticated the coin, we consider its precious-metal value along with any applicable collector or numismatic value.

Depending on the coin, factors such as date, mint mark, rarity, condition, certification and current collector demand may affect what we offer.

5. Make an Offer

After the evaluation, we'll explain what we've found and make a cash offer based on the coin's current value.

The evaluation is free, and you're under no obligation to sell. If you accept the offer, we'll complete the required identification and paperwork and pay you in cash.

What Determines the Value of a Coin?

The value of a gold or silver coin isn't always determined by its precious-metal content alone. Depending on the coin, several factors can affect what it is worth in today's market.

Precious-Metal Content and Spot Price

For gold and silver coins, metal content and purity provide an important starting point. Current gold and silver spot prices fluctuate, so a coin's underlying precious-metal value can change with the market.

Date, Mint Mark, Rarity and Mintage

A coin's date, where it was minted, how many were originally produced and how scarce it is today can affect collector interest and value.

Simply being old doesn't necessarily make a coin rare.

Condition and Grade

Wear, scratches, damage, alterations and previous cleaning can affect a collectible coin's value. For some coins, relatively small differences in condition can make a substantial impact.

Certification, Errors and Varieties

Third-party certification and grading may influence a coin's marketability and value, although not all grading services are viewed the same way in the collector marketplace.

Certain minting errors and recognized varieties may also create additional collector interest.

Regardless of certification, we perform our own authentication before purchasing coins.

Current Collector Demand

Ultimately, collector demand influences what a collectible coin is worth in the current market.

That's why an old price guide, an online listing or the amount someone else is asking for a similar-looking coin doesn't necessarily establish what your coin is worth today.

A coin's value may reflect both its precious-metal content and collector interest.

Before Selling Your Coins: Three Common Mistakes to Avoid

If you're considering selling an old coin or collection, what you don't do before having it evaluated can be just as important as what you do.

Assuming Old Means Valuable

Age alone doesn't determine a coin's value. Some older coins were produced in large quantities, while particular dates, mint marks or varieties can be considerably scarcer.

Precious-metal content, condition and current collector demand also play a role.

Assuming an Online Asking Price Is the Coin's Value

Finding what appears to be your coin listed online for thousands of dollars doesn't necessarily establish its market value.

An asking price tells you what a seller hopes to receive - not what a buyer actually paid.

Coins that appear similar can also differ significantly in date, mint mark, condition, variety, certification or authenticity.

Don’t Clean Coins Before Having Them Evaluated

Bring your coins in exactly as they are.

Don't polish, scrub or use an online cleaning method before having them evaluated. Cleaning can scratch a coin, alter its surface or otherwise damage it. If the coin has collector value, those changes could reduce what it's worth.

You don't need to make your coins look better for us. Let us evaluate them in their existing condition first.

Before You Visit

Walk-ins are welcome. No appointment is necessary.

If you plan to sell, please bring a physical, valid, non-expired driver's license or state-issued ID. We cannot accept a photograph or image of your identification on your phone.

If you don't have a driver's license or state ID, bring two forms of photo identification. At least one must show your date of birth and current address.

“The staff was very friendly and attentive! Jessica and zJen greeted me warmly when I walked in, I did not make an appointment. The guys Evan and Smoke were able to inspect my items with their fancy gadgets and doodads!!! They were super transparent with a monitor facing me that weighed and analyzing the items. I had several silver coins that I would only get face value at the bank! They were able to give me far more than M&T would have given me! Only suggestion is the shopping strip is small and needs those flag signs so commuters will know its there!”
